Sport

Pupils achieve well in team and individual sports because they have access to highly effective teaching and coaching in PE
— ISI Inspector

First and foremost sport is about participation and enjoyment.  At Hilden Oaks our aim is to provide a meaningful programme of physical activities to INSPIRE, MOTIVATE, GUIDE, RECOGNISE and SUPPORT ALL children to reach their full potential.  We encourage a love of formal and informal physical activity in a safe, fun and positive learning environment both within and outside of the school grounds.

We believe an optimal learning environment is one which develops skills, character and values. By instilling a positive behaviour it is hoped our pupils will continue to lead healthy, active lives into adulthood.

Transition & Reception

Physical Development lessons are led by specialist PE teachers. These lessons are based around locomotive, stability and manipulative skills and cover games, gymnastics and dance. There is also an option to take part in bike skills within the school day delivered by CyclemeTots.

Pre-Prep

Physical education lessons are delivered on a daily basis, continuing with locomotive, stability, and manipulative skills, which then transfer into athletics, basketball, cricket, dance, football, gymnastics, hockey and tennis. Swimming lessons take place in the Trinity term.

All pupils are given opportunities to take part in House competitions and some go on to represent the school at District level. In 2018, we were Kent Champions at Rapid Fire Cricket.

Prep

In the Michaelmas and Lent terms the major girls’ sports are netball and hockey, and the major boys’ sports are football and rugby. Athletics, cricket, and cross-country running are taught to both boys and girls. Pupils in Form 6 are also taught the fundamentals of Korfball (similar to netball/basketball for mixed teams of eight). Every pupil in Prep will have swimming lessons for one term.

Fixtures

Every pupil has an opportunity to represent the school both against other schools and in inter-house matches. Each pupil belongs to a school House (Cork or Holm) and takes part in all the major sports.

School fixtures generally take place on a Wednesday (U10 & U11) or Thursday (U8 & U9) afternoon, with some tournaments taking place on a Saturday. Swimming galas are usually on a Monday or Tuesday after the school day.

Sporting Achievements

We celebrate all levels of sporting success regularly in assembly including; ‘player of the match’ and we encourage our most able students to pursue sports outside of school to maximise their potential. In addition, all our individual sports accolades are recognised on our Sports Star display board.

Sports Scholarships

A sports scholarship is sometimes offered to our most deserving pupil from Form 2 – Form 5.

We are proud of the fact that several of our former pupils have been awarded sports scholarships for their senior schools.
