Holly, 11, wins bronze as part of England U13 team
Badminton prodigy Holly Williams has played her way to a bronze medal for England’s Team Skyfall at a prestigious Under 13 international tournament.
Local girl Holly, who is a Year 6 pupil at Hilden Oaks School, flew to Hungary earlier this month to take part in the Nation to Nation Under 13 Cup. She was part of a three boy, three girl England team which took on nine other Eastern European national teams. The team returned home with an impressive 3rd place finish, only narrowly missing out in the semi-final after a 5-4 loss to Serbia.
Coached at Hildenborough Badminton Club by Alex Easton, Jo Muggeridge (former British number 1 ladies player) and Steve Higgins (England U17 fitness coach), Holly won five of her six singles, and both of her doubles matches.
Delighted with his protégé, who he spotted at the age of six, Alex Easton said: “Holly has done brilliantly. She is an exceptional player for her age, regularly taking on children far older than she is. She works hard in training and I am sure she is set to have a bright future and will represent England in the senior ranks if she keeps up the hard work.”
Holly has rapidly moved up the England ranks since she started playing five years ago. She was selected for the Kent Under 11/13 squad at the age of seven, and recently took the Under 15 Kent Championship Singles title at the age of 11.
Holly’s father Pete added: “We are so proud of Holly. We can’t quite believe what she has achieved in such a short period of time, and we look forward to the incredible adventure that lies ahead!”
